Under Your Sink

Garbage Disposal Repair Groveland Homeowners Trust

A garbage disposal that hums, leaks or backs up the sink stops the whole kitchen. Ramson Appliances repairs and replaces garbage disposals for homes in Groveland and across South Lake County, including the units that share a drain with your dishwasher.

We find out why it failed before we touch anything. A jammed flywheel, a tripped overload or a loose sink flange is a quick fix. A cracked body or a burned-out motor means a new unit, and we can install it on the same visit.

Your disposal and dishwasher share a drain, so we check both connections on every visit. If the dishwasher itself is the problem, see our dishwasher repair service.

What we check on every visit

  1. 1Sink flange. The most common leak point. We reseal it with fresh plumber’s putty.
  2. 2Mounting ring. Holds the unit to the sink. A loose ring lets it wobble and leak.
  3. 3Dishwasher inlet. Where the dishwasher drains in. Clogs here back up the dishwasher.
  4. 4Flywheel and impellers. Where jams happen. We free them and check the grind ring for wear.
  5. 5Discharge tube. Carries waste to the trap. Its gasket is a frequent side leak.
  6. 6Motor. Tested for power draw, bearing noise and a seized shaft.
  7. 7Reset button and hex socket. The overload reset and the socket used to turn a jammed flywheel by hand.

Symptoms and Causes

Common Garbage Disposal Problems We Fix

Match what you are hearing or seeing to the most likely cause, and whether it is something you can safely check yourself first.

  1. 01

    Humming but not spinning

The motor gets power but the flywheel cannot turn. Usually a bone, pit or utensil wedged between the impellers and the grind ring, or a seized motor.

Try the hex key under the unit

  2. 02

Will not turn on at all

Silence when you flip the switch. The overload reset has tripped, the wall switch or outlet has failed, or the wiring under the sink has come loose.

    Press the red reset button

  3. 03

    Leaking under the sink

Water from the top points to the sink flange, from the side to the dishwasher or drain connection, and from the bottom to cracked housing seals.

Close the water valve and call

  4. 04

    Slow draining or backing up

Fibrous food, grease or starch packed into the drain line or trap. If the dishwasher drains into the disposal, it backs up too.

    Skip chemical drain cleaners

  5. 05

    Loud grinding or rattling

Something hard is loose in the chamber, the impellers are worn, or the motor bearings are failing. Metal on metal gets worse with every use.

    Stop using it and call

  6. 06

A smell that keeps coming back

Food trapped under the splash guard or in the grind chamber. Cleaning usually fixes it, but a constant odor can also mean a slow drain.

Honest Advice

Repair or Replace Your Disposal?

Most disposals last 8 to 12 years. Age matters, but where the problem is matters more.

Repair it when

  • It hums from a jam that will not clear by hand
  • The overload keeps tripping on a working motor
  • Water drips from the sink flange or a hose joint
  • The wall switch or wiring has failed
  • The unit is under about 8 years old

Replace it when

  • Water leaks from the bottom of the housing
  • The motor is burned out or seized solid
  • Rust is eating through the grind chamber
  • It jams every week even with care
  • The unit is 10 years old or more
  • 0 to 7 years: usually repair
  • 8 to 9: it depends
  • 10+: usually replace

Garbage Disposals and Septic Systems

Plenty of homes around Groveland, Mascotte and Howey-in-the-Hills run on septic instead of city sewer. A disposal works fine on septic when it is sized right and used with care. We can fit a septic-safe model that adds enzymes to help break food waste down before it reaches the tank.

Keep these out

  • Grease, oil and fat
  • Coffee grounds
  • Bones and fruit pits
  • Pasta, rice and potato peels
  • Celery, corn husks and onion skins

Good habits

  • Run cold water before, during and after
  • Feed scraps in slowly, not all at once
  • Choose a septic-safe model with enzymes
  • Pump the tank on schedule

I used Ramsom Appliances to install a dishwasher that I was gifted. My installer, Rafael, was knowledgeable, professional, and overall a pleasure to have for this job. The dishwasher is level, he made sure the water line was installed at the right angle to prevent a backup in the flow of things. The attachment to the garbage disposal was perfect with no leaks afterwards. The front office staff, Ms. Vanessa was also very nice and professional and was able to schedule my service appointment for the next day, which I was very happy about that. I highly recommend RAMSON Appliances. I will use them in the future.

  • Great experience. Scheduling appointment was easy. They gave a heads up via text when they were on the way and they were on time...answered all my questions and gave me a whole education about what was wrong with my refrigerator and how much parts and labor would cost to get to the bottom of it. There were no sleazy tactics to just get my money. Straight up, honest service. I will call again when needed and refer to anyone who needs appliance service.

Easy to contact, quick appointments. The refrigerator lights fix was more difficult than anticipated and took 2 service calls but the tech followed up quickly and i was only billed for the additional parts, not 2 calls. This is the 3rd time we’ve used Ramson and still very satisfied.

Questions

Garbage Disposal Repair Questions, Answered

Ask us directly

Why is my garbage disposal humming but not working?

Humming means the motor has power but the flywheel cannot turn. Something is usually jammed between the impellers and the grind ring. Turn the power off at the switch, then use the hex key in the socket on the bottom of the unit to work it back and forth. If it will not free up, the motor may be seized and we can test it.

How do I reset my garbage disposal?

Turn the switch off, wait a few minutes for the motor to cool, then press the small red reset button on the bottom of the unit until it clicks. Turn the cold water on and try the switch again. If it trips again right away, there is a jam or an electrical fault that needs a technician.

Should I repair or replace my garbage disposal?

Repair it when the problem is a jam, a loose flange, a failed switch or a leaking connection. Replace it when the housing is cracked and leaking from the bottom, the motor has burned out, or the unit is more than about 10 years old. We tell you which one makes sense before any work begins.

How long does a garbage disposal last?

Most garbage disposals last 8 to 12 years. Stainless steel grind parts and higher horsepower motors tend to last longer, while hard water, grease and heavy use shorten their life.

Can I have a garbage disposal on a septic system?

Yes, as long as the septic tank is sized for it and you use the disposal with care. Septic-safe models add enzymes that help break down food waste. Keep grease, coffee grounds and fibrous scraps out, and expect to pump the tank a little more often.

Can a garbage disposal problem affect my dishwasher?

Yes. Most dishwashers drain through the disposal, so a clog in the disposal can leave standing water in the dishwasher. A brand new disposal also has a knockout plug that must be removed before the dishwasher hose is connected.

What should I never put down a garbage disposal?

Grease and oil, bones, fruit pits, eggshells, coffee grounds, pasta and rice, potato peels, onion skins and fibrous stalks like celery or corn husks. Also keep out anything that is not food, such as glass, metal and paper towels.

Can you install a new garbage disposal the same day?

Often, yes. If your current unit cannot be repaired, we can usually remove it and install a new one on the same visit, connect the dishwasher drain and test everything for leaks before we leave.
